Experience I was the Houston Astros #1 pick in 1988.I have been doing private instruction and coaching select baseball in the Houston,Tx. area since 1996.
Past/Present clients I have worked with such players as Carl Crawford(while at Jeff Davis High)first pick in second round of the 2000 MLB draft. Also Vince Blue(Lamarr High) a 10th round selection.John Hale(Lamarr High) committed to Rice Univ.Eric Iland(Lamarr High) a top prospect in the 2007 MLB draft.
Question I have a boy (9) who is a terrific hitter. His mechanics are just text book. He has moved up to kid pitch and most of the kids who kid pitch are wild and erratic at best. In fact today, 5 of our kids got hit by a pitch (with a half dozen almost getting hit). They all did well turning so they were hit in the back. But this team we faced today walked 14 of our batters. They were that bad. My son got up and the pitcher threw him 3 pitches. He swung at all, but it was weak and late. I asked him what happened (he was also hit by a pitch in his previous at-bat) and he told me he was scared because the pitchers were so wild. I told him I understood and then suggested that maybe he wear a heartguard and he thought that would help. What else can I do? I am throwing much faster when we are in batting practice but as he put it, "I know you are not going to hit me."
Answer If your son is not already I would say move to selesct ball.Pitchers will more than not have way better control.I think you should get all the protection your son needs.A elbow pad,by the football body suit that will protect his ribs and back. The better protected the more confidence your son will have and wont develop a fear for the ball.
