Question
What does it mean when a pitcher "strikes out on the side"?  Is it the same as striking out the side?

Answer
Candy,

I haven't heard the term used that way before.  Striking out the side is getting strike outs of three batters to get their three outs for the inning.

I think maybe someone was using the strike out the side term incorrectly.

Hope this helps!
