Question
HI, My name is Ethan Stetson and I am a 19yr old student at University Of Canterbury in Christchurch, New Zealand. I am working on a research project for IT class and my question for you is: "What is the set of criteria a scout uses to asess prospects for the outfield positions?"
As the research project is focussing on revealing the usefullness of e-mail as a research tool it would be ideal if you could send a reply directly to my address. Thanks for your help.
Regards, Ethan Stetson.

Answer
Hi Ethan,

interesting research project.  I do not have your email address as it is not included when you post a question to AllExperts.

As for the scouting question for outfielders, it varies accordingly to the level of competition.  The majors and minors have franchise specific conditions based on long term development of both team and players.  For those of us in the youth leagues, we are often happy to have what we can get.  I've not coached players older than 16, so you'll have to ask someone else about players that age or older.

I would ask that outfielders be quick on their feet, have a keen sense of timing, a good 'eye' for the ball.  I always look for outfielders who keep active in the outfield by encouraging each other, covering the play, covering up behind certain infield throws, have a strong throwing arm and accuracy.

Hope this is useful,

I would prefer questions regarding coaching from atom to pee-wee, ages 7 to 14. I have no problems answering questions about coaching other sports. General questions: baseball rules, setting up a little league, establishing emergency action plans, coaching skills, techniques, discipline, rewards, sport/league promotion.
