Baseball Instruction/All-Star Selection

Question
Brian,

I would like your opinion.  I know it's early to be asking, but hey what the heck.

In our league (7-8 yr old division) each head coach selects his "top 4" players to go to our All-Star Week.

I am keeping stats; BA, Fielding %, and everything else possible for coach pitch.

My real question is this:  In your opinion, should I go by stats only or what other criteria might I consider in making my decision?

The challenge is I have 3 studs and 3 other kids that realistically could fill that 4th spot.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Jim

Answer
Jim,

At the 7-8 level, stats truly aren't everything.  One thing I've noticed is that some kids really improve over the season.  If among those three others, one has improved dramatically through the year, that will be your best player at the end of the year.  I think it is important to reward someone who has improved over the course of the year.

Also, from an All-Star perspective, look for the kid that makes the defensive plays.  That is so important at that level, because outs are sometimes hard to come by.  So, I'd probably reward good defense a bit more then good offense.  Also, I'd reward power over batting average, but that's just me...

Hope this helps!

Brian
