Where do you place seeded teams into a 9 and a 5 team bracket?

I'm not sure I can answer because I'm not familiar with what the brackets you are talking about look like.  But I'll give you general rules.

The number one team should always have the easiest path to the championship.  So, on a four team bracket:

Number 1
Number 4

Number 2
Number 3

If I added a fifth team, I'd have #4 play against #5 for the right to play #1.

Same principle for more teams (9 teams)

                    Number 1
Number 8             Winner of 8 vs 9
Number 9
                    Number 4
                    Number 5

                    Number 2
                    Number 7

                    Number 3
                    Number 6
