Baseball Instruction - avoid stepping out

Expert: Willie Ansley Jr. - 11/26/2006

Question
How can we avoid from our son stepping out instead of stepping into the pitch.  He is a good contact hitter but this is taking away his power and lots of hits.

Answer
Hello Mrs. Vidal One of the things you can try is have him hit with his front foot inside a tire. This will allow him to move his foot but cut down on how much it moves. Also make sure who ever is throwing him batting practice is not hitting him. Some times dads dont understand that by throwing thier child batting practice and the child spends his time dodging balls that this will start to show up in games. You can also get him to stand a little closer to the plate so that when he steps out he can still have good plate coverage.I must say that correcting this problem will not nessacerally help with his power. Also have him watch certain big league hitters and show him how they do not step.Try SEARCHING "baseball hitting tips" and look for a website called N D G baseball. On this site you can watch big league hitters in slow motion.
