Baseball Instruction - bat size

Expert: Willie Ansley Jr. - 9/12/2006

Question
I want to buy a bat as a gift for a boy age 12
I know he likes aluminum bats . what size of bat should I gat him and what does -3 , -10 means?

Answer
Tam Bui, first of all thanks for the question. When buying a bat the thing you must pay attention to is the size and weight. The numbers you see on a bat indicates the length of the bat and the difference in the weight and the length.Example.A 32in. bat that weighs 29oz is a -3 bat. Most wood bats are -3.When checking to see if a bat is the right size for your child it is important to know several things. First, does he play select ball? Does he play Little League ball? Reason being in select ball he would be allowed to us whats called a SENIOR LEAGUE bat. Which has a bigger barrel that a little league bat.
Have your son hold the bat straight out with one hand about shoulder height. If he can hold it up for several seconds without the barrel dropping, then he can probablly handle that bat.Watch out.Dont buy him a bat that is too long even though he can hold it up.Most times kids swing bats that are to long and it develops another bad habit(a long swing) Thanks for your time P.S. I would recomend a 12 yr old to swing a 29in 21oz bat, or a 29in 19oz
