Question
I coach 9&10 yr old LLB. I have a friend that played pro ball that now runs a hitting and pitching instructional facility that would like to help with a couple of my practices. My question is some of the other coaches said this would be illegal because he does not coach or manage in our league. What would be the ruling?

Answer
Hi Joe,

if you call in an "expert" to assist in some 'camps', I see not problem with that.  If this friend is attending your games behind the bench then you may have problems.  Register him as an assistant coach in that case and the problem is solved.  No rules exist stating that 'over qualified' coaches are not allowed.

I think those coaches who gave you the warning are blowing hot air up your...equipment bag! ;)

I have sent many kids to baseball camps and did not have to register them.  We've also had 'experts' attend many of our practices and we broke no rules.  I am unaware of any rules that state you cannot bring outside help to your practices.  Games are different and (usually) all those behind the bench have to be registered in your league.  I would think it's for financial and insurance purposes.

If you are really spooked by these 'gits' who don't want you to have outside advice, call and ask your league for a ruling.  Make sure its only for your practices and that you attend all of them.  You'll learn so much from these guys.

Best of luck,

I would prefer questions regarding coaching from atom to pee-wee, ages 7 to 14. I have no problems answering questions about coaching other sports. General questions: baseball rules, setting up a little league, establishing emergency action plans, coaching skills, techniques, discipline, rewards, sport/league promotion.
