Baseball Instruction/fear of getting hit by a pitch

Question
My 9-year-old son was hit by a pitch square in the back about mid-season and ever since he's petrified of getting hit again. Once the pitcher begins his windup, my son starts bailing out of the batter's box. He's so down and frustrated right now he wants to quit, which would be a shame because he's actually a very good player. We've tried extra BP, lots of pep talks, etc. but nothing seems to work. Can you suggest any strategies for dealing with this fear and getting him "back on the horse"?

Answer
Hi Jim,

its all up to him.  You can always try throwing tennis balls and getting him to play dodge-ball.  The tennis-dodge ball will give him agility and slowly build his confidence back.

Meanwhile, there is little you can do.  He has to realize that the best way to avoid being hit is to hit the ball with the bat.

He will be stepping out until he regains his confidence.  Don't say a word and let him deal with HIS problem.  I've seen this many times and there is no magic potion, no secret words nor is there a switch that activates bravery.  It has to come from within.

So, practice the tennis dodgeball, keep him in the BP's, teach him to bunt, etc.  His confidence will return with age and experience.  The stronger he gets, the more courage he'll have.  It may not be in this season but maybe the next (just don't tell him that).
