Question
Hey dennis,
Its my first year coaching instructional baseball 6-8yrs. We currently use a pitching machine instead of the coaches pitching. What would benifit the kids the most? Also, A coach wants to have the players pitch? I contend that the players reaction time is good enough to field the ball if they are pitching at a close distance.

Answer
Hey Derek,

Kids tend to get real comfortable when a machine pitches.  They realize real soon that the chances of getting hit are very slim.. Start off with the machine, and weed off of it after they start hitting on a regular basis.  It is very different hitting from a LIVE pitcher.   You will know when they are ready for a real pitcher.
Good Luck!
Dennis
