Question Coming back from a dissapointins season. Record 0-9 with an era of about 14.0. I really want to develop my control? what would you reccommend? Drills? Practices? anything? Also what would you consider a effective windup. Can you give me advice on hiding the ball. Same goes for the streach. This year I'm playing Varsity. I need all the advice i can get
Answer Dennis, the first thing I would tell you on developing your control would be to go out and practice knowing where your release point has to be to throw each pitch that you have. This can be done vet easy.If you do not have someone to throw with you can set up a target and throw at different points on that target.Example, set a tire up and throw at the different points on the tire trying to stay out of the hole. The better you understand where you need to release each pitch to throw a strike, the more consistent you will throw strikes even if your mechanics is not the best.Secondly, work on your delivery to try and get it the same everytime. You might try making sure you are gathering yourself before you throw the ball to the plate.Meaning watch your great pitchers and see how they are not trying to use their body to gain velocity. They are very under control throughout their delivery.Slow yourself down so that your arm has a chance to catch up to your body and that you know that when your front foot lands your throwing arm will be in the right position(elbow above the shoulder, arm in a 45 degree angle either with the ball facing toward third base or up above your head).
An effective windup to me is one that is under control.Watch Curt Scheilling. When you talk about hiding the ball I would say that as you go to the plate try and keep your glove hand between the hitter and the ball.Dont drop your glove hand to soon.this keeps the front shoulder closed longer. Good luck if this helps let me know, if you need a little more explanation let me know also. Also a may be able to take a look at your motion if you have any video on it and give you some pointers once I see your motion.
