Question
At what age do you think it is safe for a child to start pitching?  Our rec. dept. has just started 'kid pitch' for 7-8 year old boys.  Some of the parents are afraid that it could damage their arms in the future.  I totally disagree.

Answer
Hello Jenny!

Well, they have to learn sometime.  In our league, 7 and 8 year olds use a batting machine or coach pitch.  I feel that some 8 year olds can begin to throw and should be started VERY SLOWLY.

IF a child a that age can pitch a ball with accuracy, that is all that matters.  The child is taught the basic throwing stance, pause, wind-up and release.  No pressure to have a rocket fastball...just accuracy and mechanics.
No curveball until 13-14 as this is the throw that is most difficult to master and hardest on growing children.

And let's admit one thing...throwing a ball is not a normal action.  From the outfield or on the mound, throwing a ball is not a natural act.  SO:  learn the best method and start slowly to improve.

So if your kids can throw with accuracy, I don't see why they can't start to pitch.  Just make sure the objective is to build a sound foundation and not to blow the kids arm out!
