Baseball Trivia (General)/Balls in the dirt

Question
When a ball is pitched into the dirt by the pitcher, the ball is almost always replaced. Yet when a ball is batted on the ground to an infielder, or grounded down the line into the outfield, the ball is not replaced.

Why?

Answer
There are multiple reasons for this.
1. When it is a pitched ball the catcher is right next to the ump to get a new ball.
2. Alot more scuffing occurs when a ball is thrown straight into the ground than there is on a groundball.

My forte as far as questions go is mainly historical trivia questions. I am also very strong in rules.

Experience

I have played the game since I was in First Grade and play today. I also was the player coach on my high school and college team. Perhaps most importantly is I have read enough baseball books to fill a library and have a small one in my house. However I feel that my most important experience is that I watch and soak in every game that i watch.

I have won many fantasy baseball leagues.
