Baseball Trivia (General) - No-Hitter

Expert: Jamie Selko - 5/10/2008

Question
Just recently a pitcher from the White Sox (Flyod) was carrying a no-hitter into the ninth inning, yet the Twins had scored a run.......My question is...What is the most number of runs that a team has scored while having the oposing pitcher throw a no hitter?......and for bonus...Has any pitcher thrown a no hitter and lost?

Answer
Howdy- I'll take these in order asked, if you don't mind.
1) On 1 July, 1990, Yankee Andy Hawkins lost a no-hitter to the White Sox 0-4.  He pitched an eight inning complete game in the loss.   The next closest most runs allowed in a no-hitter is two, done six times: Steve Barber/Stu Miller, 1967; Ben Sanders, 1892; Al Atkinson, 1886; Ed Seward, 1888; Ed Lafitte, 1914; and George Nicol, 1890.
2) Lost No Hitter: Hawkins (above); Barber/Miller (above); Ken Johnson, 1964;Matt Young, 1992.
3) Some other info you may be interested in: The Most Runs Scored for a pitcher in a No-Hit Shut Out: 18, for Pud Galvin, 1889.  The Most Runs Scored for a pitcher in a winning No Hitter: 21 for George Nicol (see above).
4) Steve Dalkowski lost a Northern League One Hitter 8-9.  Legend has it that he lost a No-Hitter in high school 0-8.  Ron Necciai struck out 27 in a No-Hitter in the Appalachian League in 1952.
