Subject: tagging up

Question
I was keeping score at a little league game last nite.  The runners at 3rd base were not tagging up with every pitch. They basically just stood about  6 feet off the bag and watched the game.  Several players did this. Should they be out? Could we have thrown the ball to 3rd base and they would be called out or would they just be put in a pickle with the chance to possibly score?  What is the penalty for this or is tagging up just a courtesy?

Answer
Tagging up is not a courtesy. This must be done everytime a live ball is going to be caught and the runner cannot advance until the ball is caught. If the umpire was paying attention and saw this, if you would have thrown the ball to 3rd, the runner should be out. Hope this helps. Thanks for the question.

 Matt.
