I will deal with the major leagues only from 19th century to present. I`m good on baseball history, records, statistics, ballparks. Try to stick to on-the-field stuff. I`m not interested in personal off-the-field stuff like spouses, girl friends, drug habits, salaries, mascots, etc. If you already know the answer to the question, please don't ask it. I don't want to play "stump the expert."

Baseball Trivia (General) - Most Runs Scored in Extra Innings

Expert: Tom Schott - 7/11/2008

Question
I just finished watching the Nationals vs. the D-Backs game where there were 8 runs scored (combined) after the ninth inning.  I am curious to find out what the most runs ever scored in a game after the ninth inning?

Thanks,
Chris

Answer
Chris,

I assume your question is how many runs by both teams together after 9 innings. But a team on its own has also been able to match the most runs ever scored in a game after 9 innings by =both= clubs.

The most I can find in either case is 12, a couple of times. 11 runs a few more times.

Most runs by both clubs, 10th inning
AL—12—Minnesota 11, Oakland 1, June 21, 1969
NL—11—New York 6, Brooklyn 5, Apr 24, 1955

Most runs by both clubs, 11th inning
AL—11—Seattle 6, Boston 5, May 16, 1969
NL—11—New York 6, Chicago 5, June 30, 1979
Pittsburgh 6, Chicago 5, Apr 21, 1991

Most runs, 12th inning
AL—11—New York vs Detroit, July 26, 1928, 1st game

Most runs by both clubs, 12th inning
AL—11—New York 8, Detroit 3, May 14, 1923
New York 11, Detroit 0, July 26, 1928, 1st game

Most runs, 15th inning
AL—12—Texas vs Oakland, July 3, 1983
