Question I once heard of a first baseman making an unassisted triple play. How is this possible?
Answer Hi - thank you - actually (2) instances of a first baseman making an unassisted triple play - both times an American League player
9/14/23 - George Burns of the Boston Red sox - runners on first and second - 0 outs - caught a line drive, tagged the runner off first and then ran to second and stepped on bag before base runner returned
5/31/27 - Johnny Neunn of the Detroit Tigers - same situation
In both instances, knowing baseball, I have to assume the runners were running on the pitch
There have been a total of 14 unassisted triple plays in the history of major league baseball - therefore one of the rarest plays to happen in a baseball game
