Baseball Trivia (General) - Fielder's Choice Question

Expert: Tom Schott - 7/2/2009

Question
Is it scored as an FC when a bloop flyball drops to right field and the runner on first gets forced at 2nd because he thought the flyball would be caught.  The batter-runner could not have been thrown out at first with ordinary effort but the runner at first was forced out at 2nd.

Answer
Hi Chris,

The case you describe would not be fielder's choice. A fielder's choice can occur only on a ground ball, according to the rules. What has happened in your case is a single to short right field and the runner thrown out attempting to advance. It is scored just as if he had been thrown out at third base or home.
