Baseball Trivia (General) - Most Hits, No Runs, Game

Expert: Tom Schott - 9/12/2009

Question
What is the record for the most hits for a team in a 9 inning game where the team did not score any runs? Also, extra inning game (if different)?

As an aside, what is the theoretical maximum number of hits for a team without scoring any runs in a 9 inning game (my friend and I calculated 45)?

Answer
Ken,

The record for most hits in a 9-inning game with no runs is 14.

NL: New York (vs Chicago), September 14, 1913
AL: Cleveland (vs Washington), July 10, 1928

For an extra-inning game, it is 15 hits.

NL: Boston (vs Pittsburgh), July 10, 1901 (12 innings)
Boston (vs Pittsburgh), August 1, 1918 (21 innings)
AL: Boston (vs Washington), July 3, 1913 (15 innings)

I don't know what the theoretical maximum is, and I have not got the time to work on the question. Thanks.
