Question
What does "WHIP" mean when discussing pitching stats ?

Answer
Changed subject line.

Jim,

The acronym stands for "Walks and hits per inning pitched." It's an excellent indicator of a pitcher's effectiveness. The number is reached by the formula (BB+H)/IP. Anything below 1.000 is outstanding. Obviously the closer to 1.000 a pitcher is, the better. The current lifetime leaders in WHIP still pitching are Mariana Rivera (1.009) and Trever Hofman (1.049)
