Question
WHO WAS THE LAST AMERICAN LEAGUE PITCHER TO BAT BEFORE THE DESIGNATED HITTER RULE WENT INTO EFFECT?

Answer
Robert,

The last pitcher to hit before the DH rule went into effect in 1973 was Nolan Ryan of the California Angels on Wednesday, October 4, 1972. By the way, Ryan lost that game 2-1, to Oakland, although he gave up only five hits, struck out 10, and even stole a base in the game. Cheers.
