Baseball Trivia (General) - Baseball bat

Expert: Geoff - 6/19/2007

Question
What is the heaviest bat ever recorded used in a major league baseball game or in practice. I know Babe Ruth used a pretty large bat and even now Alfonso Soriano uses a large bat but i dont know how much they wiegh. I have heard rumors of 40 oz.

Answer
Hi James,

Thanks for writing.

The only official baseball rule about the bats Major Leaguers can use is:

1.10 (a) The bat shall be a smooth, round stick not more than 2 3/4 inches in diameter at the thickest part and not more than 42 inches in length. The bat shall be one piece of solid wood.

There is no official record for heaviest bat ever used in a game (or practice).

Here's a link though, to a website that talks about bats used in the early days.  Apparently back then using a bat weighing 48-50 ounces was pretty common.

Hope this helps.

Best Wishes,

Geoff
