Baseball Trivia (General) - Consecutive Home Runs

Expert: Geoff - 7/2/2007

Question
What is the record for most consecutive pitches (possibly across one or more games) being hit for home runs, off the same pitcher?  And what is the most consecutive pitches being homered by a batter? Earlier this season, I think one batter had a spell of 3 home runs off four pitches.

Answer
Hi Grant,

Thanks for writing.

The record for most consecutive plate appearances in which a batter hit a home run is 4.  This has been done 6 times.  Once each by Bobby Lowe, Mike Schmidt, Lou Gehrig, Rocky Colavito, Mike Cameron, and Carlos Delgado.  There are no consecutive pitch records because only for the past 20 years or so has every pitch been tracked.  In other words no one knows if when Bobby Lowe hit 4 consecutive home runs back in 1894 whether or not they were on consecutive pitches or not.

On the pitching side, the record is also 4, done just twice.  Paul Foytack and Chase Wright each gave up home runs to 4 consecutive batters they faced.  Again, there are no consecutive pitch records.

Best Wishes,

Geoff
