Baseball Trivia (General) - Fair or Foul?

Expert: Geoff - 4/10/2007

Question
Batted ball down the third base line originnaly hits in fair territory. The ball then crosses over the third base bag in the air hitting in foul territory after passing third base.  Is this considered a fair or foul ball?

Answer
Hi Pitty,

Thanks for writing.

That's a fair ball.

When a ball first lands in fair territory and then passes over the first or third base bag it is a fair ball.  In an extreme situation imagine a line drive that hits the first or third base and then deflects into foul territory. It's a fair ball because it first landed in fair territory (the first and third base bags are in fair territory) and then it passed over some portion of the bag before going foul.

Best Wishes,

Geoff
