About Tom Schott
Expertise
I will deal with the major leagues only from 19th century to present. I`m good on baseball history, records, statistics, ballparks. Try to stick to on-the-field stuff. I`m not interested in personal off-the-field stuff like spouses, girl friends, drug habits, salaries, mascots, etc. If you already know the answer to the question, please don't ask it. I don't want to play "stump the expert."

I've written on the subject, and I have substantial library of resources.

Publications
Numerous encyclopedia, newspaper, magazine articles. One book, several book chapters.

Education/Credentials
Ph.D. in American history.

Question
QUESTION: I am curious which pitchers have allowed the most career home runs.  Thanks

ANSWER: Hi Rick,

Here are the top ten for the National League:

HOME RUNS ALLOWED                 HR
1    Warren Spahn                434
2    Robin Roberts               418
3    Phil Niekro                 392
4    Steve Carlton               379
5    Don Sutton                  325
6    Tom Glavine                 322
7    Greg Maddux                 318
8    Juan Marichal               317
9    Tom Seaver                  314
10   Steve Trachsel              293

And the American League:

HOME RUNS ALLOWED                 HR
1    Frank Tanana                422
2    Jack Morris                 389
3    Catfish Hunter              374
4    Bert Blyleven               372
5    David Wells                 355
6    Mike Mussina                345
T7   Jamie Moyer                 343
T7   Luis Tiant                  343
9    Early Wynn                  338
10   Mickey Lolich               329

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: Thanks.  I think those apply by league only?  According to Yahoo! Moyer has allowed 435 career and Clemens 360.  Guys whose career was significant in both leagues may not be there at all.

Answer
Sorry for the confusion here. I did the run only on pitchers with at least 2000 innings pitched. I should have mentioned that. I did another run for pitchers with at least 1000 innings pitched, without regard to league. This might be more what you're looking for. I can give you a by-league look if you want. Please note these stats are only good through 2006.
