QuestionWho was the only player inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame who did not deliver an acceptance speech?
AnswerHowdy- there have been many, many players in the Hall of Fame who did not deliver an acceptance speech because they were deceased at the time of their selection. I am not aware of any member who was alive at the time of his induction who did not give a speech (even Steve Carlton went to his induction), but, then again, I am a stats guy, not a lore maven.
Sorry I could not give you an irrefutable answer, but I suggest that you contact the Hall itself to discover if any living electee declined to appear at his induction.
****************************************************************************** Howdy- I actually was intrigued by that thought that someone would pass up his induction, but then I figured, "Some of these gents were pretty old when the Veterans' Committee chose them, perhaps some just couldn't make it". Well, it turns out that that was correct, but I then figured that you were probably more interested in guys who were voted in by the BBWA.
In fact, not one but TWO such inductees did not go to their induction ceremony! One, Mel Ott, had a quasi-legitimate baseball reason- he was managing the Oakland Oaks at the time (but, you'da thought he would let a coach take over for four days so's he could go to Cooperstown). The other, Charlie Gehringer, had No reason not to be there. The owner of a car dealership in Detroit, he cited "business reasons" for not going. Business Reasons! Please! It was your business, you're the owner... you couldn't take a weekend off to be inducted into the Hall of Fame?! Man, that is just weird.
Sorry about the first answer- It was just beyond my limited imagination that someone would skip their induction. I hope the fact that i found two instead of one makes up for that.
