The cousin of John Smoltz you are looking for is Tiger great Charlie Gehringer. Gehringer played 2nd base for Detroit from 1924 to 1942. He's in the Baseball Hall of Fame. But Smoltz has other ties to the Tigers too.
John Smoltz grew up a Tigers fan and was originally drafted by the Tigers. While still in the minors, he was traded to Atlanta for Doyle Alexander.
