Baseball Trivia (General) - Question re: Ball hit that stays within batter's box

Expert: Geoff - 4/16/2007

Question
If a batted ball stays WITHIN the batter's box, is the ball considered FAIR or FOUL?

Answer
Hi Michael,

Thanks for writing.

Most of the batter's box is located in foul territory, but a small part falls in fair territory.

As you can see in this picture:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Batter's_box

So if the ball was touched by a fielder while it was in the fair portion of the batter's box, then it would be a fair ball.  If the ball was touched by a fielder while it was in the foul portion, it would be a foul ball.

Best Wishes,

Geoff
