Baseball Trivia (General) - Record number of hits in a ballgame

Expert: Geoff - 7/1/2007

Question
Geoff,

What is the record for total number of hits in a ballgame (by both teams) without any being for extra base hits?  Tonight, the Mariners and Blue Jays are in the middle of the 7th and have a combined 15 singles between them so far, with no extra base hits between them.  I'm interested to know.  Thanks!!

Matt

Answer
Hi Matt,

Thanks for writing.

For some reason, extra base hit records are tracked by how long the game goes, not by how many singles were hit.

There is a record for longest game without an extra base hit by either team:  the White Sox and Yankees on 08/21/1933 played an 18-inning game with neither team recording an extra base hit.  There were 22 singles in the game.

Another record is for longest double-header without an extra base hit:  the Indians and the Tigers on 08/06/1968 played 26 innings (17 in the first game, 9 in the second).  There were 18 singles in the first game, 17 singles in the second game, but no extra base hits in either game.

Hope this helps!

Best Wishes,

Geoff
