Baseball Trivia (General) - Squeeze play

Expert: Patrick Clevenger - 9/3/2007

Question
In a squeeze play, the bunt is laid down, the runner gets to 1st, the out is attempted at the play but the runner is safe.  How is this scored in the book?  Hit, RBI sac bunt, what?  Thanks a bunch for clearing this up.  Kel

Answer
It depends.

If the fielder fields the ball cleanly, and then throws the ball to the catcher who does not muff the ball, it will be ruled a single.

However, if the fielder or catcher make an error (fielding, throwing, or catching), it would be ruled an error with the at bat being counted as a fielder's choice.
