Baseball Trivia (General) - double header history

Expert: Geoff - 8/14/2007

Question
Is there ever a situation where the home team plays different visiting teams in a double header? how frequently does this happen?

Answer
Hello again Hilary,

Although I answered your double-header question last week, I did come up with some other information you'll find of interest.

Although a double-header by definition is two games played on the same day by the same 2 teams with just a short break in between, twice in baseball history has a team played two diferent teams on the same day.

On September 25, 2000 Cleveland played Chicago during the day (and won) and then played Minnesota that night (and lost).

On September 13, 1951 St. Louis played New York during the day (and won) and then played Boston that night (and lost).

These had not been regularly scheduled games but were late season make-ups due to rain-outs earlier in the season.  There is a huge disadvantage to the team playing their second game of the day against a team that is more rested.

Best Wishes,

Geoff
