Baseball Trivia (General) - fewest pitches_again

Expert: Geoff - 9/3/2007

Question
Whearas pitch counts have not always been tracked in baseball, in the modern version of the game it is.  What is the fewest pitches for a 9 inning game by a pitcher?  I realize that a guy one time had 28 in a 1-0 LOSS!  The only errant pitch being a homer!

Answer
Hi Ray,

Thanks for writing.

The record for fewest pitches in a complete 9-inning game is 58.  Charles "Red" Barrett holds this record.  It was set on August 10, 1944 when Barrett and the Braves beat the Reds 2-0.

I don't understand your comment about a pitcher throwing 28 pitches while losing 1-0.  That has never happened in the Major Leagues.

Best Wishes,

Geoff
