Question
Hey Geoff,
Regarding the gwrbi, who has the most record, al and nl? Also why was the stat repealed as an "official" stat? Do you think it will ever be reinstated or only used as a contract stat? Thanks. Frank.

Answer
Hi Frank,

Thanks for writing.

The Game Winning RBI was an official stat from 1980 to 1988.  The official records for most in a season and in a career are as follows:

Career NL:  Keith Hernandez 129
Career AL:  Eddie Murray 117

Single Season NL:  Keith Hernandez 24 in 1985
Single Season AL:  Mike Greenwell 23 in 1988

Considering how carefully everything is measured these days, I'm kind of glad that MLB put their foot down and repealed this stat in 1988.  So much of it depended upon batting order more than anything else (too many GWRBIs were happening in the 1st inning, first RBI of the game) that it was seen as not a real good indication of how a batter does in clutch situations.  I don't see it ever coming back.

But it keeps Mike Greenwell's name in the record book!

Best Wishes,

Geoff
