Question
QUESTION: What players have hit 100 home runs left handed and right handed? (Mickey Mantle is one for instance).

ANSWER: Hi Mike,

Thanks for writing.

I came up with 6 switch-hitters who have hit at least 100 home runs from each side of the plate:

Mickey Mantle (372 Lefthanded, 164 Righthanded)
Eddie Murray (362 LH, 142 RH)
Chili Davis (233 LH, 117 RH)
Bobby Bonilla (182 LH, 105 RH)
Bernie Williams (179 LH, 108 RH)
Ted Simmons (146 LH, 102 RH)

Among active switch-hitters, Chipper Jones has the best chance of joining this group.  He currently has 290 home runs batting lefthanded and 80 home runs batting righthanded.

Best Wishes,

Geoff

QUESTION: Was Reggie Smith a member of the 100-100 club too?

Answer
Hi Mike,

When I first read your question I immediately thought of Mantle, Murray, and Reggie Smith.  I was quite surprised to learn that of Smith's 314 home runs he hit 251 of them as a left-handed batter and only 63 from the right side.

Reggie Smith was the first switch-hitter to hit 100 home runs in both the AL and the NL.  (Since matched by Chili Davis and Eddie Murray.)

Best Wishes,

Geoff
