Baseball Trivia (General) - Most losses

Expert: Geoff - 4/4/2007

Question
what player has lost the most games all-time ?  Not pitching, losses.  Player on a team with the most losses.

Answer
Hi Thomas,

Thanks for writing.

It's certainly an interesting question... it would depend upon a number of other factors though so I suspect there really is no definite answer.  Do you only count games in which the player played?  Or do you include the losses if the player was on the active roster?  What about time spent on the disabled list?  For instance: if the player was on the disabled list for 15 days (or the entire season for that matter) would those team losses count against him?

A best guess though would be Nolan Ryan.  He played during the 162 game era (prior to 1961 teams only played 154 games a year), he played on a lot of pretty so-so teams, and he played for 27 seasons.

Hope this helps.

Best Wishes,

Geoff
