Although the Star Spangled Banner was not adopted as the official national anthem until 1931, the first time it was played at a major league game was on September 5, 1918 at Wrigley Field in Chicago.
This was the first game of the 1918 World Series between the Boston Red Sox and the Chicago Cubs. It was played by a band with the crowd singing the words during the 7th inning stretch.
