Baseball Trivia (General) - scoring

Expert: Patrick Clevenger - 8/16/2007

Question
how is a sacrifice scored if a hitter flys out and a runner(s) advance not necessarily to home or is it just a fly out if scored as a flyout why does a pitcher get credit with a sac bunt that does not hurt his batting avg when the runner does not advance home

Answer
If the batter flies out, and the runner advances a base, but does not score, it is just scored a fly-out and the runner advances a base.  It would be the same if a batter grounds out, and any other runner advances a base (including scoring a run).  I've wondered why it is that way when you can bunt someone over without hurting your batting average, but can't do the same with a fly ball.
