Is that first baseman meeting with the pitcher to tag out the runner legal in the bigs, and if so has it ever happened?

Hi Robert,

Thanks for writing.

Ah yes, the old "hidden ball trick" is perfectly legal in Major League Baseball.  However, if the pitcher (without the ball) makes contact with the pitching rubber, a balk is called instead.

Here's a link to an article that claims the hidden ball trick has been done successfully over 300 times in Major League Baseball history.
