Question
The course I teach has an evaluation method that has 20% of the final mark for basic quizzes in-class assignments, 40% for a major project and 40% for the exam. How do I calculate the final mark for the marks given below.

Marks that make up  the 20% portion of marks : 8/10, 6/10, 7/10 and 8.5/10
Marks that make up  the 40% portion of marks : 7/10 and 9.8/10
Marks that make up  the 40% exam portion of marks ; 48/56

How would I calculate each portion and how do I calculate the final mark ?

Answer
Here is how to achieve the results:

Basic quizzes:

Consider them all as one big quiz and so the score would be (8+6+7+8.5)/40   or 29.5/40  or  74%

***************************************************
Major project:

Again (7+9.8)/20 or 16.8/20  or 84%

***************************************************
Exam:

48/56  this is 86%

***************************************************
Now to get the final grade you'd simply multiply the three results by the proportion they are worth and sum.

(29.5/40)*0.2   +  (29.5/40 * 0.4  + (48/56)  * 0.4

The result:  83%

A nice solid B.  Not bad.
