Question
how would i add a sales tax of 6.25% to any dollar amount. i can't figure out how to add it to a dollar and cents amounts. example: what is sales tax of 6.25% of $10.27

Answer
Hi AJ

6.25% is equivalent to 0.0625.
Using a calculator, we multiply 10.27 by 0.0625 to get 0.641875. We round this to the nearest cent, i.e., $0.64. This is the sales tax added onto the price tag.

In general to add X% onto something that costs $P, we add P*(X/100) onto P. The final price including the sales tax is P+(1+X/100).

e.g., if something initially costs $5.00, including a 10% sales tax, the final cost is 5+(1+(10/100)) = $5.50
