Question
Hello:

An employee can retire from his place of employment if he meets the following requirements: His age and years of service must total 85.

If the employee started at age 30, how old will he be, and how many years of service has he worked upon retirement?

I thank you for your reply and answer.

Answer
Hi Kenneth,

Point #1: The number of years of service increases at the same rate as he adds years to his age.

Point #2: We seek the earliest point of retirement, i.e., we have to find the smallest integer x (representing number of years in service) which satisfies the inequality 30+2x >= 85

Solving this, x >= 27.5. Restricting to whole number of years only, x must be 28 years. Employee can retire roughly at age 58. (This may not be strictly correct because it depends on his D.O.B.)
