Question
The value of a house at the end of 8 years was $189,000.What was original cost to the nearest $100.00 if it appreciated at he rate of 6% per year or original cost?
In the solution they had: 6% per year x 8= 48% appreciation for 8 years. Therefore $189,000 represents 148% or 1.48. How did they get this 148%

Answer
Hello, Lynn.

I am sorry for taking so long to respond.

We know that this particular house appreciates over eight years. By definition, appreciation means that the house increases in value. If its value stayed the same (highly unlikely), it would remain at 100% of its original value. Therefore, its price would stay the same.

Since this house appreciates 6% per year for eight years, the total appreciation has to be 48%, or 148% total.

To figure out the original price, divide 189,000 by 148% (1.48).

189,000 / 1.48 = $127702.70, or $127700

Hope this helps.

Regards,
John
