Question
Ian & Michael together weighed 48 pounds. Ian weighed two pounds more than Michael. How much did Michael weigh?

Answer
Hello, Anthony.

x = Ian

y = Michael

x + y = 48

y + 2 = x

We see that x = y + 2 in the second equation. Now we can substitute y + 2 in for x in the first equation.

y + 2 + y = 48

2y + 2 = 48

2y = 46

y = 23

Therefore, Michael's weight is 23 pounds.

Since Michael weighs two pounds less than Ian, Ian must weigh 25 pounds.

25 + 23 = 48 pounds.

Answer: Michael weighs 23 pounds.

Hope this helps.

Regards,
John
