Question
How do you express the area of a  kitchen floor that is 12'6" in width and 10'4" in length,in square feet, and as an improper fraction?

Answer
Hello, Angel.

The first thing to do is to convert the inch measurements into fractions. 6" is equal to 6/12 foot.

4" is equal to 4/12 foot.

Ok, now you have 12 6/12 feet and 10 4/12 feet.

Next, convert the two mixed numbers into improper fractions by multiplying each denominator by its respective whole number, then adding its numerator to that total. The denominator remains the same for each fraction.

12 6/12 becomes 150/12 (12 x 12 = 144; 144 + 6 = 150). 10 4/12 becomes 124/12.

Next, multiply the fractions. 150/12 x 124/12 = 18600/144, or, after reducing, 775/6 square feet.

Hope this helps.

Regards,
John
