Basic Math - regrouping-grade 4 homework

Question
we are trying to help our daughter with her math homework:  the question is "what is the greatest number of hundreds you can add to 300?  without having to regroup.  we are so confused at the moment and have looked up regrouping but it's the first question where were lost.  could you please help us?  thank you sooo much.

Answer
Hello, Sheila.

First of all, the hundreds column is the column to the far left, where the 3 is. The 0 on the far right is the ones column, and the 0 in the middle is the tens column.

The question is asking what is the greatest number you can add to 3, without having to regroup. To regroup means that you'd add a 1 to the thousands column, which is to the left of the hundreds column.

The greatest number you can add to 3 without having to regroup is 6. If you add 6 to 3, you get 9, and 9 would be put for the answer in the hundreds column.

Adding 7, 8, or 9 to the 3 in the hundreds column would require regrouping, because you can't fit 10, 11, or 12 for your answer in the hundreds column.

Hope this helps.

Regards,
John
