Question
if tony climbs 3 1/2 meters per minute. how many meters did he climb in 2 1/4 minutes ?  the answer is 7.87 i have to show how to get it in decimal and how to get it in fraction and i cant figure it out

Answer
3 1/2 = 3.5  (1 divided by 2 = .5) and
2 1/4 = 2.25 (1 divided by 4 = .25) so, to find out how many meters he climbed in 2.25 minutes, you multiply 3.5 times 2.25.

If you keep the fractions, you need to changed the mixed fraction into an improper fraction.  Take the whole number, multiply by the denominator and then add the numerator, to get the new numerator.

3 1/2 = 7/2 and 2 1/4 = 9/4.  Multiplying those you get 63/8 (or 7.87).  You should know how to multiply the decimals
3.5 times 2.25 = 7.87
