Question
2/3q + 5 = 3/4

what does q equal?

Answer
subtract 5 from both sides of the = sign, then divide both sides by 2/3 (the same as multiplying by 3/2).

2/3q + 5 = 3/4
2/3q + 5 - 5 = 3/4 - 5
2/3q = -17/4
2/3q (3/2) = (-17/4)(3/2)
q = -51/8

To check your answer, fill in -51/8 for q and do the math
