Question
10% of what number = 100,000

20% of what number = 100,000

what is the formula to figure this out?
thank you

Answer
How would you find a percentage of a number?  Say you wanted 10% of 100, you would multiply 100(.1) and get 10.  In your case, you know the 10, you know the percent, but need the 100, so

.1x = 100,000 and

.2x = 100,000

For the first eq, divide both sides by .1 and for the second, divide both sides of the eq by .2

.1x/.1 = 100,000/.1
x = 1,000,000

.2x/.2 = 100,000/.2
x = 500,000
