Question
A rectangular swimming pool is four times longer than is wide. The pool is surrounded by a deck that is 3m wide. Find the dimensions of the pool if the area of the deck is 306m^2

Answer
Hello Maria,

Let x=the width of the pool (in meters), then 4x=the length.
The rectangular deck is x+6 meters wide by 4x+6 meters long.
The area of the deck
= (the area of the outer rectangle) - (area of the inner rectangle, i.e. the pool)
= (x+6)(4x+6)-(x)(4x), which is 306

Thus, 4x^2+6x+24x+36 - 4x^2 = 306
==> 30x=270 ==> x=9

Thus the pool must be 9 meters wide by 36 meters long.

Abe
