Question
Uncle Sam spent one-fourth of his life as a boy, one-eighth as a youth, and one-half as an active man. If Man Wrinkle spent 11 years as an old man, then how many years did he spend as an active man?

Answer
David,

Let us solve this.

Say Sam lived total 'x' years.

So his stages of life are:

Boy - (1/4)x
Youth - (1/8)x
Active man - (1/2)x
Old - 11

So total of all these stages is x.
Means

(1/4)x + (1/8)x + (1/2)x + 11 = x

Solving this,

(2x+x+4x+88)/8 = x

On further solving,

x = 88

So his life spent as active man = (1/2)x = 44 years.

I hope this helps you.

Let me know if you need additional information.

All the best.

Regards,
Pawan
